I created this comic for the section ‘For equality and against gender violence’ in a new edition of the City of Dos Hermanas National Comic Competition. It did not receive any recognition, which could be attributed to its deliberately uncomfortable ending.
I have long believed that many stories that tackle difficult issues and end with a happy ending end up detracting from their power. When the conflict is resolved in a reassuring way, the viewer may feel that the problem has been solved and does not require further involvement. The story ends, and with it, the concern also ends.
In contrast, an uncomfortable or even harsh ending maintains the tension beyond the last frame. It leaves the viewer in a state of unease that does not easily dissipate and may stay with them later, when they face the same problem in reality. I believe that this discomfort is precisely what can trigger a more critical view and a greater capacity for reaction.
